VicGrid is a relatively new body, sitting within the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

VicGrid is responsible for coordinating the planning and development of Victoria’s Renewable Energy Zones and the transmission network that connects renewable energy to the state’s power grid.

Six Renewable Energy Zones have been identified in the state with the greatest potential for renewable energy, such as wind, sunshine, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. 

VicGrid is working to develop Renewable Energy Zones in a coordinated way that delivers the infrastructure we need in the right places at the right time and in a way that minimises impacts on local communities and shares the benefits more fairly.

They are working to achieve this on a number of fronts, including:
They have invested  $480 million in projects to strengthen and modernise the state’s grid and address some capacity constraints that are stopping renewable generators getting all their power into the grid.

They are carrying out a significant program of reforms to how transmission is planned and delivered called the Victorian Transmission Investment Framework. These reforms are aimed at attracting investment and getting the strategic planning of the network right, but a major focus is ensuring earlier and more meaningful engagement with communities and partnerships with Traditional Owners.
