On March 18, 2022, AuWE was honored to host its first webinar in 2022, titled “Offshore Wind in Victoria & Australia – What’s the Way Forward”. This session gathered public and private stakeholders to discuss key opportunities and challenges in advancing the offshore wind industry in Victoria and its implications to other jurisdictions in Australia. Speakers include the Victorian Energy Ministry (pre-recorded), AEMO, Macquarie Corio Generation, Hydro Tasmania, Mott MacDonald, and Aurora Energy Research.

• Offshore wind is among the most crucial steps to realize an orderly de-coal in Victoria

• Despite a 30%-50% construction premium compared with land-based renewables, offshore wind has advantages in resources concentration, transmission line build-out, and community negotiation. (We are talking about 20GW+ energy needs to fill in the coal gap)

• AEMO will include Victoria’s offshore wind target into Policy Direction Paper to be submitted by the end of this June.

• Social licensing is currently the most important focus of developers (Macquarie’s GSOW is under preliminary study and community engagement)

• Expectations on energy storage, policy, and more supports for the establishment of a local supply chain and skill transfer​
