Building Global Bridges: The Netherlands’ Role in Advancing Australia’s Offshore Wind Future
Onsite at Australia Wind Energy, Ms. Eline Timmer, Manager of International Events at Holland Home of Wind Energy (HHWE), led a Dutch delegation to foster deeper ties with Australia’s offshore wind sector. She shared how HHWE’s early market commitment—dating back five years—combined with the Netherlands’ global offshore experience, is shaping a platform for long-term collaboration, innovation exchange, and local capacity growth.
Executive Summary:
1. A Long-Term Bet on Australia’s Offshore Wind Future
Ms. Eline shared that HHWE began engaging with the Australian market five years ago, long before offshore wind became part of the national conversation. “We believed in its potential and committed to building relationships early,” she said. That foresight is now paying off, with the Dutch Pavilion presenting a strong lineup of Dutch companies skilled in maritime infrastructure, balance-of-plant engineering, and offshore innovation.
2. Bringing Global Experience to New Markets
While Australia’s offshore wind landscape is still in its infancy, Dutch industry players are no strangers to such conditions. “We’re not afraid of the challenges. We’ve faced similar ones globally,” Eline noted. The Netherlands’ decades-long leadership in offshore wind positions it as a trusted partner in helping new markets like Australia accelerate project delivery, infrastructure development, and local capability building.
3. Collaboration over Competition
HHWE’s approach to international markets is rooted in partnership rather than rivalry. “We’re not here to take over a market—we’re here to collaborate,” Eline stated. Backed by a government-supported innovation ecosystem and a strong tradition of public-private coordination, HHWE aims to foster bilateral opportunities that advance offshore wind development for both Australia and the Netherlands.
4. More Than a Pavilion—A Platform for Partnership
Beyond the exhibition, HHWE, together with the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sydney, organised a three-day offshore wind trade mission to help Dutch participants better understand Australia’s regulatory environment, port and grid constraints, and local project pipelines. As Eline concluded, "We see a powerful partnership forming between Australia and the Netherlands and we're excited to build it together."
